Campaign Pillar 2: The Future of Our Recreation Facilities

The second point under my Well-Being pillar is one I feel strongly about: we need a real plan for the future of Meaford's recreation facilities. The Blue Dolphin Pool dates back to 1966. The Meaford and St. Vincent Community Centre and arena to 1972. These are beloved facilities but they are showing their age, rising maintenance costs, poor energy efficiency and accessibility gaps compared to modern builds. At some point the cost of continuously patching aging infrastructure exceeds the cost of planning properly for its future. That is exactly the thinking behind the proposed $200,000 study in the 2027 draft budget, which if approved by council, would size up all options from major renovation to a new build, and what either would cost and require in terms of partnerships.
Recreation facilities are not a nice-to-have for a small municipality. They are part of the economic case for living and working here. Communities competing to attract new residents, businesses and professionals like doctors are competing on quality of life as much as on jobs or housing costs. A pool and arena that work reliably are part of that pitch. These facilities also anchor public health, youth programming and community connection in ways that are hard to quantify but very easy to feel the absence of when they fail. A new or substantially renovated facility could run into the tens of millions of dollars, so this will need partners to be financially realistic, the YMCA is a natural fit given its recreation and programming expertise, and our military base is another potential partner worth exploring for shared facility use. Getting the study funded in 2027 is the first step toward making sure Meaford is never caught flat-footed when these aging assets reach the end of their working life.
