Campaign Pillar 2: Well-Being, Starting with Agriculture

The second pillar of my campaign is Well-Being, and I want to start with something close to my heart: agriculture. Meaford's land area stretches across nearly 590 square kilometres and the overwhelming majority of that land is rural and agricultural, encompassing hamlets like Bognor, Annan and Leith and the surrounding countryside, each with its own farming families and priorities. Our unique microclimate, warmed by Georgian Bay and sheltered by the Niagara Escarpment, makes this one of Ontario's premier growing regions. Agriculture is not incidental to Meaford's identity. It is foundational to our economy and our character and it deserves a formal voice at the municipal decision-making table.

Right now that voice is not formalized and I think that needs to change. I am proposing the creation of a dedicated Agricultural Committee for Meaford with direct representation from our rural communities. Bringing farmers together: orchards, row crops, livestock, market gardens, into a single committee means the full range of agricultural needs gets heard and reflected in the decisions we make on planning, drainage, roads and development. It gives council a standing source of practical, practical advice from the people who work this land every day. That is not a small thing. That is exactly the kind of structural change that shows our farming community they are seen, valued, heard and included. I look forward to your thoughts on this one.
