Infrastructure: Roads, Bridges, Drainage and Facilities

You have heard me say it before and I will keep saying it - roads are a priority. Meaford maintains over 400 kilometres of roads and roughly 80 bridges. That is a vast network for a municipality our size and it demands sustainable, predictable investment rather than reactive fixes. Along with roads I am also hearing consistently from residents about the safety issues surrounding scooters and e-bikes on our streets. The OPP have already conducted education sessions in our school and they are aware of the concern as raised by both the school and residents. This needs further attention and I will continue to push on it.

Drainage deserves equal attention too. Stormwater ponds in new developments manage growth responsibly, while municipal drains and rural drainage systems are essential to keeping farmland productive and protecting properties from flooding. It may not be glamorous infrastructure but it is absolutely foundational, especially for our farming community.

Our facilities are aging as well and we cannot ignore that reality. Council has approved a $200,000 study to be included for discussion in the 2027 capital budget to assess the future of our municipal facilities and give the next term of council the information it needs to make sound, sustainable decisions grounded in real data and public input rather than guesswork. I think that is exactly the right approach. Good decisions start with good information. Infrastructure investment is not just about fixing what is broken, it is about protecting our quality of life and setting Meaford up for the decades ahead. I look forward to your thoughts.

Have thoughts or concerns about Meaford’s infrastructure? I’d love to hear from you.
